8 Cool Firefox Plugins You Never Knew Existed
1. Stopwatch - This simple little extension gives you a neat stopwatch. That’s it. A stopwatch. It’s simple, easy, and it works.
2. Search Status - This is one of my favorite extensions. It sits in at the bottom of Firefox and gives you access to a lot of pertinent information about the website you’re on. Both google and alexa pagerank status is included by default. If you right click on the "q" you can see backward links, whois info, and other information.
3. Select Search
- This is an improvement on the default right click and search option that comes default with Firefox. With this plugin you can right click and choose to search a TON of different sites including yahoo, google, google images, ebay, amazon, etc. You get the picture. It’s neat and it works.
4. Aardvark - This is an extension designed specifically for web developers. When you right click on a page and "start aardvark" it separates divs, tables, and other elements with a red border. This allows you to visually see the different elements of the web page and put something visual to the code you’re working with.
5. Tinyurl Creator
- Ever have a website with an insanely long and convoluted url that you wanted to easily turn into a tiny url? Well, that’s what I thought. With a simple right click, this extension contacts the tinyurl website and copies the new url into your clipboard. Neat, huh?
6. Secure Password Generator - With the billions and billions of hackers out there right now trying to get your super secret hot chick getting info, it’s probably best to create and keep secure passwords. This plugin does it.
7. img tag - Yes hotlinking is stealing, but this extension makes it so easy it’s fun. It’s not stealing if it’s your website and your images, so let’s have at it. Right click on any image click "make image tag" and it’ll make an html image tag and copy it to your clipboard for you.
8. Advanced History Manager
- This is probably one of the more popular extensions I’ve included on this list. The Advanced History Manager does a much better job than the default one that comes with Firefox. It’s cool. Trust me.

The tinyurl one is redudent. If you go to the tinyurl site there is a link you can just drag to your bookmark too bar. One click of that bookmark creates a tinyurl.

Img tag really is a boon. Speaking as a talented web developer, I’ve already lost count of the hours upon hours I have spent trying to remember “img href=”.

I use Aardvark. This is quite possibly one of my favourite extensions. Being a part-time web designer, this comes in very handy.

How does Select Search differ from ConQuery, which allows you to right-click & search through any site you have a mycroft search plugin for (the same plugins used in the search bar at the top-right of the browser).

SearchStatus is amazon spyware. No thanks.
Check out the privacy notice:
The SearchStatus extension that you are installing exchanges data with Alexa Internet, Inc. (”Alexa”), an Amazon.com company in order to provide you with information about the web pages you view.
FOR EVERY WEB PAGE YOU VISIT WHILE USING SearchStatus (EXCLUDING SECURE DOMAINS AND THOSE YOU HAVE CONFIGURED AS PRIVATE), CERTAIN INFORMATION, INCLUDING YOUR IP ADDRESS, THE URL OF THE WEB PAGE YOU VISIT, AND GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT YOUR BROWSER AND COMPUTER’S OPERATING SYSTEM, WILL BE TRANSMITTED FROM YOUR COMPUTER TO ALEXA. SOME OF THE URLS YOU VISIT, WHICH ARE TRANSMITTED TO ALEXA, WILL CONTAIN INFORMATION THAT IS PERSONALLY IDENTIFIABLE.

now I know why I didn’t know these existed
December 20th, 2005 at 10:33 am
Not that unknown at all.
December 20th, 2005 at 10:43 am
Most of these seem worthless, except SearchStatus which is one of my two most used extensions (webdeveloper being the first).
That last response about spyware; Of course Search Status is sending back information to amazon, it also does this to google, as does the alexa toolbar, the google toolbar, and just about anything that requests information back from them. You can disable the alexa request or google request if you want to. All the legal above is saying is it is collecting your user_agent information and the pages you goto, and has to at least collect the page you are on to give you back it’s ranking.

There aren’t billions of hackers. There are only 6.4 billion people alive. 2/6 or 1/3 of people aren’t hackers. Those extensions were horrible, except for tinyurl. I hate when people who write blogs do a firefox extensions list and then submit it to digg. Happens every day.

You can’t “steal” bits, because theft requires that the counterparty be deprived of something (and no, being deprived of a *potential* profit is not equivalent). Please don’t promote the sort of language that groups like the RIAA and MPAA use to skew the debate about copyright.
That is all.

Aardvark is useful for everyone not just developers. I use it many times every day when reading pages with lots of distracting sidebars, ads, etc. I start Aardvark then hover over a distracting area press R (remove) and it’s gone. Alternately I can hover over the part I like and press I (isolate) and it’s the only thing left on the page. Press Q (quit) to stop Aardvark. Good not only for reading but to create a page to print that only has the information you need.

Recently one of my friends recommended me an extension named Hyperwords that totally changes the hypertext principle — no more pre-defined link, any word or phrase can be the link. I’ve downloaded it from http://www.hyperwords.net/ and installed on my home PC. Great extension! I’ve already removed 3 other extensions because Hyperword do the same things and much more! I think it will be very useful for almost everybody. It makes searching, blogging, bookmarking, emailing document fragments, translation from / to different languagues much faster than you could do it before. Worth to try. Really!
